The 75th anniversary of this amazing and mystical national park was in 2009 . Come join retired park ranger Travis White as he shares some of his Smoky Mountain memories and tells you why it is still one of his favorite parks. Travis White has spent 32 years with the National Park Service at the Great Smoky Mountains, Mammoth Cave, Fort Clatsop, Cabrillo National Monument, and most recently at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Environmental Speaker Series: The Life of the Bald Eagle - Wolf Creek Environmental Center - 7 p.m. Eagles have fascinated people through the ages with their keen eyesight, marvelous powers of flight, and command of the skies. We will be celebrating Medina County’s first bald eagle nest at Chippewa Lake together by sharing the life history of this majestic bird. Dan Bertsch is the chief naturalist for the Medina County Park District. He spent 12 years in the Chilkat Valley of Alaska which plays host to the world’s greatest gathering of bald eagles. Environmental Speaker Series: Magnificent Monsters of the Ice Age: Mastodons, Muskox and Short-faced Bears . . . Oh My! Wolf Creek Environmental Center - 7 p.m. During the last Ice Age, many wonderful large mammals roamed what is today Ohio. What were these animals like, and how did they live? Along with exploring these questions, we will be highlighting the Stag-Moose whose remains were unearthed near Chippewa Lake in 2008. We’ll end with a discussion of why these magnificent mammals disappeared from Ohio and the face of the earth. Bob Glotzhober is Senior Curator of Natural History at the Ohio Historical Society where he has worked since 1980. He is best known for his work with dragonflies but has a generalist’s knowledge and enthusiasm about almost every aspect of Ohio’s natural heritage. Mr. Glotzhober is currently coordinating a project with several other people to establish a database of all Ice Age mammals. Ages 10 to adult. No registration required. Free. |

Introduction to the Digital Darkroom - Wolf Creek Environmental Center - 1 to 4 p.m. Learn the basics of processing your digital photos! We will cover getting them transferred to your computer, basic file management strategies, editing workflow for tonal and color correction, dust spotting, etc., and also getting the images out of your computer either in printed form or formatted for posting on the web or in email. We will be using Photoshop Elements for practical, hands-on demonstrations, but the techniques should work in any editing software. Students are encouraged to bring laptop computers with photo editing software installed so they can work through the examples during the session. There is a $30 fee per person. Ages 16 and up. Environmental Speaker Series: Hippos: Natural History and Conservation - Wolf Creek Environmental Center - 7 p.m. Despite being the second largest mammal on land and widely reported to be responsible for several human deaths in Africa, these amazing mammals were virtually “undiscovered” by the scientific community. Glenn Feldhake will reveal the mysterious origins and theories behind the natural history and behavior of hippos. He will also share about their interactions with the environment and the debates surrounding their conservation. Glenn has crisscrossed the globe to study hippos in the wild, trained safari guides, consulted on multiple documentaries, and appeared on the National Geographic Channel. Glenn currently lives in Medina County and is in charge of hippo conservation for the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Look at the woodland floor in a new way after viewing slides from Jane Rogers, a woodland wildflower enthusiast. Jane draws on her years of experience to provide clear, no-nonsense ways to cultivate and propagate these native treasures and easily grow more plants from seed. She and a group of volunteers have rescued and donated over 100,000 native plants to parks and gardens throughout Ohio. Intermediate Digital Photography: Beyond the Basics - Wolf Creek Environmental Center - 1 to 4 p.m. In this class, students will learn about exposure and composition, the meaning and effects of shutter speed, aperture, sensor speed and much more. Learn how to take photographs that go beyond simple snapshots. This is a follow-up class to Digital Photography for Beginners. Brunswick Youth Fishing Derby - North Park (A Brunswick City Park) - 8 a.m. - Derby from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Young fishermen 15 years of age or younger are invited to participate in the Brunswick Youth Fishing Derby. This is the first year the Medina County Park District is hosting this event. Girls and boys alike can enjoy catching fish at Brunswick City’s North Park. Register by April 23. Advanced Digital Photography - Wolf Creek Environmental Center - 1 to 4 p.m. This advanced level digital photography class will help students get the most out of their single-lens-reflex (SLR) digital cameras. The course features classroom and field instruction to help students with image sharpness, proper tripod use, understanding histograms, white balance, bracketing exposure and much more. Students taking this class are expected to be proficient with their digital cameras or have had taken the “Intermediate Digital Photography” class previously offered. Treasure Seeking 101: Geocaching Basics - Wolf Creek Environmental Center - 2 p.m. Do you have an adventurous spirit and desire to seek out hidden treasures? Geocaching is an international search for hidden containers called caches that you find by using a GPS unit. Come learn how a GPS can help you in this “high-tech-meets-nature” sport and how to get started on your own geocaching adventures.
