Carolyn Ludwig Mugrage Park was established when Richard and Beverly Mugrage entered into an agreement to donate their property to the park district. Named after Richard’s mother, who played a key role in the family’s ability to keep the farm through the Great Depression years, the park includes just over 102 acres. Located on the continental divide, part of the park drains to Lake Erie, and part drains to the Gulf of Mexico.
Various stages of succession are present on the property as pasture land has regenerated to young ash and maple forest. In other areas, one can see some of the most impressive examples of mature oaks to be found in the county. Seasonal pools dot the forest floor beneath massive Swamp White Oak, Pin Oak, and Black Gum that characterize the wet woods found along the paved woodland trail. On higher ground, huge American beech, red oak, and shagbark hickory can be found.
The park includes two parking lots, a one-mile paved multi-purpose trail, a one-mile gravel trail, a three-acre fishing pond, an accessible fishing pier, a picnic shelter, picnic tables, a dog park, and an inclusive playground. The dog park is completely enclosed by a five-foot high fence that provides over an acre of space just for small dogs (under 30 lbs.) and a separate area for large dogs (over 30 lbs.) that is over six acres. Both sides have open turf play areas, wooded natural areas, and gravel walking trails. The inclusive playground is for children of all abilities to access and enjoy. There are double-sized ramps for wheelchair users and a poured-in-place rubber safety surface that protects children from falls and also provides easy wheelchair access throughout the playground. Friends of Medina County Parks, Inc. and many individuals and organizations raised over $250,000 to fund this playground.

As you walk along the paved trail, you will see sign posts and platforms through the woods. This series of platforms holds the pages of a children’s picture book that families can read as they stroll along the trail. The project is a cooperative effort with Medina County District Library to promote literacy, physical activity, and spending time in the outdoors. A new story will be displayed each season.
